Tulum

TULUM

Tulum is a gem in Mexico that feels like a miniature Bali.

When we decided to go to Mexico, we had a few destinations in mind that we wanted to travel there for. We wanted to dive in Cozumel, walk around the ruins at Chichen Itza, and take in the chill vibes in Tulum.
I first heard about Tulum from a friend who visited there a year before I did. Her photos were absolutely stunning and what really attracted me to it was that it was an area of Mexico that was more organically beautiful versus some of the more popular destinations I had been to like Cancun & Puerto Vallarta.
“Tulum is a slice of culture heaven amidst it’s over-developed neighbors. This is not your typical Mexico”

The best way I can describe Tulum as is a miniature Bali just plopped into Mexico. There isn’t much around this town, but the town itself is a destination. Tulum thrives on art, locally-owned restaurants and boutiques, kitsch boutique hotels, stunning beaches and a chill vibe.
While Tulum is about 1 hour and 30 minutes from the airport, it’s worth the trip. Once you arrive getting around is very easy as there are bike paths that run from downtown Tulum right to the strip of hotels, restaurants and boutiques on the beach.

Another thing that I love about Tulum is that anyone can go there with any price range. Right in town there are several good hostels to stay at. On the flip side,
on the beach you can find several 5 star boutique hotels that could cost you upwards of $500 per night. In between those two extremes there are even more options.

At the heart of Tulum it’s best asset is it’s culture which values nature and the local people. They embrace keeping buildings and art in an organic state and there is not a chain to be found anywhere in this town.

All in all, if you haven’t been to Bali and you’re looking for some Zen then I recommend packing a light bag and heading to Tulum.
