Sitting on the Back Deck, Sipping Wine and Taking in the view.
Downtown Oeroa, Waiheke Island.
Obviously New Zealand is known for their wine, and I experience first hand why they are internationally recognised. They have some amazing wines here and on Waiheke Island you get the opportunity to see where some of these spectacular wines are made, and meet the passionate people who make them happen. Check out my list of top vineyards to visit on Waiheke.

There are tons of beaches on Waiheke; some hidden and some in more busy areas. Whether you are looking for some seclusion or some action, you will be able to find the beach for you. The water is crystal clear and calm. Check out my post about the top beaches on Waiheke.

OK so this definitely ties into the beaches, but the water here really is so crystal clear blue that it made for some awesome swimming. It was a bit chilly while we were here so we didn’t swim too much, however we met some locals that said there is great snorkeling here too.
While driving around and getting lost on Waiheke Island, there were times that I felt like I was in the Lord of the Rings movie. It’s hard to believe that so much land can be so green. I’ve never been anywhere so green before.
A unique thing about Waiheke is that there is an intricate system of walking trails, located all around the island. When you arrive on the island you can grab a free map of the trails at the ferry terminal. I highly recommend checking some of these trails out and exploring the island by foot.
The food scene here is amazing. There are some world-class chefs working at the restaurants on Waiheke and you get delicious meals in a comfortable, cool atmosphere. Our favourite meal of this entire trip was at The Archive Bistro & Bar located at Mudbrick Vineyards. The meal was sensational! Read about this meal and some of our other favourite places to eat on Waiheke.

The main town on Waiheke is Oneroa and there are tons of mom-and-pop shops and boutiques to check out here.
Wandering around the vineyards is awesome to do, even if you are not in to wine. The vineyards on Waiheke offer some of the most stunning views. Check out the list of my favourite vineyards.

A popular thing to do on Waiheke is to rent an e-bike to hope from vineyard to-vineyard. The island is really easy to get around as it’s small, however it is quite hilly which is where the e-bike comes in quite handy. You can rent your bikes at eCycle and spend the day adventuring on two wheels.

It’s hard to explain, but Waiheke is one of those places that just has an amazing vibe. Everyone is in a good mood, the beaches are chill, the restaurants are delicious and comfortable. Maybe it’s the wine? Maybe it's Kiwis? I don't know but I loved the vibe of this island!
If you are really looking for the lowest cost option that is still offers nice rooms, then this is the place you should book. It’s a nice hostel and you can get a private double room for $60 USD per night.
This stunning B&B is in a great location and features an amazing home-cooked breakfast for guests. You can't really beat this price with the amenities, as during our trip it was $78 USD per night.
We wanted to stay at this property when we visited, however it was booked up since we planned this trip last minute. This unique property is comprised of airstreams which have been converted into little hotel rooms for guests. Bathrooms are shared, however you are in a nice location for walking to vineyards and not too far of a trek to the beach. While we were here this property was $95 USD per night.
This little property features lovely rooms in a nice location. Waiheke Island is a bit expensive, so this is one of the lowest cost options of places to stay with an ensuite restroom. While we were here a room at Waiheke Island Motel was $120 USD per night.
If you are looking to really treat yourself to some refined luxuries, then this is the place for you. With stunning views of vineyards and the water, this property will make you feel like you are in heaven. With only four rooms on the property, it’s a very exclusive place to stay. While we were here rooms were $437 USD per night.
Again, if you are really looking to treat yourself this is the property to book. At $341 USD per night it’s definitely a pricey property however it offers stunning views and amazing hospitality.
This gorgeous beach is great for swimming as the water is shallow and calm. The best part of this beach is that you can easily walk to it from town, so it’s very convenient. Lot’s of boats park in this bay so you will see a ton of people coming in from their boats in the morning to grab a coffee.
This beach is also great for swimming and features some really interesting and beautiful rock structures on the beach. We loved this beach because it felt a bit more secluded as there were less people here.
Beach and wine? Yes, please! We enjoyed this beach because it’s located right next to the Man O’ War vineyard tasting room, so you can enjoy a glass of wine at Man O’ War and then move over to the beach to relax.

This beach is a whopping 2 km long, so it’s a really nice place to take a walk along the beach. The water here is shallow however it does get some small waves; meaning it’s not as crystal clear and flat as some of the other beaches. This beach had a ton of people on it, however since it's such a large beach it didn't feel overcrowded. You can also walk to some restaurants from here, making it a convenient location.
This gorgeous beach offers white sand and crystal clear water. There is a playground right next door and some BBQs as well, so this is a great place to spend the day with your family.

Amazing views at Cable Bay vineyar on Waiheke Island, New Zealand..
There are a lot of operators on the island that offer tours. I would recommend staying away from these as I saw them and they were pretty crowded buses of people. If you want a more relaxed, intimate tour of the island- rent a car or an e-bike and ride around solo.
The best way to explore Waiheke is by renting a car. Check out my post about it here.
If none of these seem like the right option for you, there are tons of AirBnBs on Waiheke too, so be sure to check them out.

Try to book your reservation around the sunset so you can take in the stunning views.
It’s good to note that in New Zealand it’s not customary to tip and this cost is included in the price of your dinner. Although, we did have such great service that we often to give an additional tip.
